It sure sounds like some background app is making noise alerts. Unfortunately, it could be any app since most nowadays seem to have some sort of auditory notification. I'd start by looking through AM as suggested by dtravis7 to see if anything looks odd (if you don't know, show us the list by saving it (File > Save). Make sure "All Processes" is selected first.
