Was this HD originally formatted on a Windows PC? If so, it is almost certainly formatted to NTFS, which your Mac can read, but not write to without 3rd party software.

EDIT: Your wording has me wondering a bit about your hookup. You mention it as a shared drive, do you mean off of your router? Regardless, if it isn't a format issue, login to a user account with admin privileges, go to System Preferences>Sharing and select the drive, click on the lock to allow changes and reset the permissions.

I've always wanted to be smart, handsome and modest. But, I guess I'll have to be satisfied with two out of three . . .
