yeah, Migration Assistant cannot restore from a backup made from a newer operating system, e.g. my new Leopard 2008 MacBook cannot access the backup from my dead Lion 2008 MacBook.

I already reinstalled Snow Leopard and updated it to the current version [10.6.8] and tried the internet recovery. No dice, my Mac (I guess since it's never had Lion on it) didn't respond to my command-R hold. I didn't have the foresight to create a bootable USB from my old MacBook, so I'm not sure what my options are now, as I found no online tutorials telling how to do this without buying a copy of lion as the first step.

So... am I stuck buying a new copy of Lion?

If so, that sucks, seeing as how I just bought it like, 4 weeks ago, for the exact same machine.
