You said your disk is too full, but I'm assuming you meant your disk was not too full because you use an external hard drive. If your disk is too full that can cause your computer to not run to it's full capability. I am told that the OS likes to have a lot of free space.

If you look at the tool bar, (Is that the Mac term?) you will see a little light on underneath the program symbol. If the light is on you know that the program is not really closed but just minimized for lack of a better term. To test just open a program then look beneath the program symbol and compare to another program you will see what I mean. I just right click the touch pad and you can then quit the program completely which will release the memory.
