I haven't seen OnyX Download OnyX for Mac - OS X maintenance & optimization tool. MacUpdate.com mentioned, and I'd warmly recommend it to check out the System, also its relationship to the hardware architecture.

Second - I haven't noted any reference to the brand of RAM. Faulty or partially compatible RAM can cause the slowness to which you refer.

I agree with cwa about a refurbished drive. As backup or storage perhaps, but not a primary internal drive.
