Hi, MKV files are usually high quality containers for h.264 video, usually used for making back-ups of Blu-Ray or HD video. I would guess that converting them to AVI (also a container) will reduce the quality. If you are playing them on a Mac, I would leave them as MKV (VLC Player will play them OK). If you have a stand alone device that requires AVI then convert them. Hope that helps.
