Having had experience with Samba, both through the easy to use UI in OS X to the command line configuration in Linux, it's always proven to get the job done with relative ease. It's a shame that a proven tool can't be included but given my limited Windows sharing requirements, as long as the Apple tool does the job, I'll be happy.
I'm sure most people won't care though - as long as the process is seamless, most consumers won't care if it's Samba, Apple's tool or some other third party implementation of SMB.
