Over heating can be one cause and quite often the fan units seize up and fail, where fitted, causes the heat to build up and the card fails. Also not regularly cleaning out dust, particularly in a MDD model, can lead to card failure.

With computers nothing 'lasts forever' as electronics must fail eventually.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
