Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive from the list on the left...then check it's S.M.A.R.T. Status (at the bottom of the window). If a hard drive is going "bad" it will say something like "failing".
You could also boot from an OS install CD/DVD and try repairing the disk from Disk Utility.
Finally...you could also try "repairing disk permissions".
