If it is a 400MHz iMac or faster, they came with Firewire 400 ports so look for an external Firewire Superdrive. It does need to be Firewire in order to be bootable as USB is much too slow, even on models up to the G5, apart from one model of iMac G5.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
