Well, you don't need to hold anything down for 15 seconds - so don't really know if that would affect anything on the reset.
Go ahead and try the SMC reset again - this time pressing the three keys on the left and holding - then press the power button and release them all at the same time.
If it is hardware issue in the first week, they may just hand you a new one.
