Reboot the computer.
Install / Reinstall the latest version of iTunes.
Can't get any more help than that with the limited amount of info you have provided, such as:
The specs of your Mac, the version of OS X, the version of iTunes.
Has this iPod ever been detected by this Mac?
Has this been your iPod and it's just now started acting up, or have you just purchased a used device and inherited someone else's problem?
