I suspect the USB drive was used as per these instructions; Boot Camp: iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7 using Boot Camp
It's the method I used on my iMac and it works fine.
External hard disk acquisition addict - but admitting the problem is the first step to a robust backup
