I think we're narrowing down the specs of your iMac. I believe it's the early 2001 model, and the ROM version suggests to me that you will need to update the firmware to 7.5.1. You can do so with MacTracker where a link is provided at the base of the page pertaining to that model of iMac.

That HD icon Info should show you the HD's capacity, as well as how much space is still available.

Re firewire: How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode [read especially the 'To use FireWire target disk mode' part]; also lots of references to it on Mac-Forums. Basically, plug in the firewire cable to both Macs, your MBP is the 'host', the iMac is the 'target'. [If it doesn't work, some suggest trying things the other way, ie. make the MBP the target.]
