Just to throw this out there, we could always change the name, but I guarantee it won't end threads being posted there that don't belong. It hasn't worked in any other forum, won't end it here.

I think it would help though. Right now the subtitle is very ambiguous.
Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

Thanks for "jumping in" on the conversation Schweb!

I definitely agree that the "Anything Goes" topic area on internet forums can be a real "hornet's nest" of problems.

But I'm not sure I agree with:

"it won't end threads being posted there that don't belong"

The angle that I'm coming from is...don't be concerned about what's posted in the "Anything Goes" forum...whether it belongs or not! As long as the content doesn't violate the website's content rules such as porn, SPAM, etc.

If it's truly the "Anything Goes" forum...then anything goes!...even if "potentially" the posting would fit better in another forum.

It's really up to the individual member posting the message to "not choose" the "Anything Goes" forum...since (for example) a hardware question would most definitely get answered "better" or receive more responses if it were posted in the "Hardware Forums".

I hope this makes sense...and you see where I'm coming from.

You have got to admit that the statement:

"Not Anything Goes In Anything Goes"

...is sort of a contradiction of itself.

Just trying to share my thoughts...no offense intended,

    - Nick

p.s. Alternate titles for the "Anything Goes" forum could be something along the lines of "Non-Computer Related Topics" or "Non-Computer Topics". I know those aren't REALLY very "catchy" or "sexy" titles..but you get the idea.

I see where you're saying, but if we let it go, the whole forum becomes a mess and we might as well have no categories at all.

The thing is, right now the title is really quite ambiguous, as is the subtitle of "Post anything you want in here.". However, the intent is basically an off-topic discussion forum. If we titled it correctly, I believe it would help (and I agree that it wouldn't mitigate the problem entirely).

I propose a title of "The Mac-Forums Lounge", with a subtitle of "The place for off-topic discussion - meet new friends here and discuss topics not necessarily Apple related".

    I'd go for that.

I'm sure that there are additional "management" or administrative" concerns regarding changing the "Anything Goes" forum name or sub-forum content that the average forum member is not aware of.

So of course these concerns would have to be addressed as well.

I think that if a new title was chosen for the 'Anything Goes" forum, and the desire is to not post computer related topics there...that the title needs to contain "info" that communicates this to the user.

So phrases like already suggested above:

    - Off-Topic
    - Non-Computer
    - etc.

The reason why I think that this is especially important is...this website gets a tremendous amount of questions posted by new members...or what I like to call "one-timers"!

Where they post one question for a problem they have...they get a helpful answer...and then you never hear from them again.

Regular members (for the most part)...know how things work. It's the "newer" folks that may be more confused....and need the "clearer" message.

    Some food for thought,

    - Nick
