Storing iTunes library on External HD???

Hi,

I am selling my iMac and need to store my iTunes library on an external HDD before my MBP comes through, what is the best way to do this so that I retain all of the album artwork too?

copy the itunes folder in the music folder to the external HDD, all the artwork should be there. Otherwise it'd only take itunes 5 or 10 minutes to redownload the artwork depending on how much music you have

What do I do when I come to put it back on the new machine as there will already be an itunes folder in music although it will be empty?

just replace it

or import the files through iTunes
File->add to library->highlight the disk and then folder->click "choose"

You could also just leave it on the external drive permanently if you so choose.
