I have a client that has two pcs that work fine on his wrt54g v5. However; he just got a mac with leopard and he can not obtain an ip address automatically connect to the router. But he can if he is connected directly to the modem. If we put in a static ip the mac os will tell us we are connected, but when we go to safari nothing. Apple says it is the router and linksys says it is the os. Any suggestions.

Have a Linksys that Linksys super told me would not work with Mac's at all. Ended up getting a D-Link.

A few months later set up the Linksys as a 2nd connection point and worked right away without issue. Am only guessing here as to what I did that got it working 2nd time around.

Go into the router settings and turn off the wireless side. Save the router settings once you do this, which should cause it to reboot.

Then go back into the router and manually set up the wireless settings rather than using their wizard. Make sure it's broadcasting it's SSID, set it to auto channel scan if that's an option, set up your encryption and password using WPA2 if you have it. Save the settings - it should reboot again.

Give it a try and see if the network shows up on your Mac now. Oh, and you do have to make sure Airport is turned on (via the icon at top right that looks like a fan).

What mac os

Ok that kind of makes sense. But I am not trying to go wireless I am trying to go hardwired. Also, what mac os are you using. The mac has leopard. This is very similar to the way Vista came out.

If you're wired - go into System Preferences - Network - highlight Ethernet on the left hand side - under Location at the top, should be set to Automatic - in the Configure: box, set it to Using DHCP - click Apply at the bottom. That should do it.

If it doesn't, then the router is more than likely set to only accept by MAC address. In which case you'll have to add the Mac's MAC address to the list in the router.

That is what we were doing with the dhcp, but it would not work. It is said connected but nothing. Does leopards tcp/ip different than tigers?

no, have Leopard on my machine and these are the only settings I've made. Would look at the router side from there. Make sure its not set up to hand out IP addresses based on MAC adress.

I own a wrt54g v5 and now use it as an access point with a wrt54g V4 as the main router. Both work fine with all 5 of my Macs with Leopard. Not sure what is going on but Bob gave you some good suggestions.

Does not make sense. The router is setup as a dhcp server and then encrypted with wep. But the leopard machine cannot get an ip. However directly connected to the modem it is fine. I have not changed any of the settings on the wrt54g v5 only with wireless security.

One thing really fast, have you tried updating the firmware in the wrt54g V5? Maybe some issue that has been fixed in a newer firmware. Worth a shot.

Yes I have done a firmware update. I have tried everything suggested....could it be a bad router, but the pcs in the house work fine.

Interesting issue. I would say bad router also but if it works on the Windows machines it should work on the Mac. What encryption you using again? WEP? WPA? Like I said here all my machines with 10.5.2 work fine with my V5 WRT54g. Very strange. Will do some more thinking and get back to you.

In other words have you tried setting the linksys for NO encryption and if your Mac connects then?

When you put in the WEP password into OSX, select 40/128-Bit HEX is your password is Hexadecimal and 128-Bit. See if that works also some have put a $ in front of the WEP Key. Is your WEP Key HEX or ASCII? 128 Bit?

Wep is hex and it is 64bit. Let's say this is the case....Why would it not obtain ip address when connected via router, but would obtain ip from modem?

My last suggestion, while not a good one, don't see it hurting anything ... is to Restore Factory Defaults from the Administration tab and start over again prior to any other changes having been made.

Then start with your Mac wired.

Ok got it to work. It is like Vista when it first came out. Router needs to be defaulted. Thank you for all of your help.
