Well done. I only wish my University, one of the largest in the U.S., would do the same!

That's entirely sensible, The huge cost of upgrading machines and software would drain the British education system. We need to spend money on good teachers, not Vista.

It seems Becta have been advising schools that they could save 50% of their costs by using open source

I personally dont think that is a good idea making schools use open source OS...
As much as i dont like the idea of M$ having a dominancy over the educational system computers i believe its the industry standard.
Learn whats most commonly used, if macs were the norm then have macs in schools, dont use other tools as a low cost solution.

I don't like to disagree, but I think having too many "norms" has made society at large more ignorant and less flexible. People have been able to lean on what's commonly used to the point that they often freak when they have to learn something new!
Could just be my intolerance for the lack of mental creativity and innovative thinking around me talking though. ;)

The story says it's MS's pricing that's the culprit. The "standard" has fallen upon evil days throughout Europe. If MS gave two hoots about its standard, its licensing fees wouldn't be synonymous with extortion.
