I am trying to reformat my external HD so I can use time machine on it. The only problem is I have about 36 GB left on my external HD and I don't have any items to delete for time machine to work. How can I reformat the disc to make room ?

You can use Disk Utility to reformat your disk. Although you're not very clear on what you're trying to do.

If you're saying you have nothing to delete to make room, well then you can't use Time Machine.

Have you emptied the trash? Cause you might have files in there that aren't deleted.

To reformat, just open the disk utility (spotlight it), and select your drive in the left side. On the right side, select "Erase" and make it "Mac OS Journaled" and hit erase...
