Ok this took me a while to figure out ... I don't know why.....
However. I could not get a snapshot of any drop down menus in Skitch like this shot
The trick I found was to hold down shift while dragging and releasing the cross hairs .
You then get a photobooth countdown which gives you time to click on the relevant menu item
