I am getting an iphone christmas.

and a week later leave for basic training so I wont be able to use it for 6 weeks.

I was wondering if i should unlock it when i get it or wait untill feb. when sdk is released.

If you don't plan on opening it till you get back, then you should wait to see what Apple comes out with in the next month or so. If there's nothing compelling or if the latest batch of firmware updates cripples the unlocking process, you'll still have an unwrapped phone that can be easily unlocked.
