for a windows machine. It's for my sister who has a pretty big house. She's thinking she may want to put the cable modem and access point in the basement, but have the computer on the second floor. I've read quite a few reviews on various adapters, but they all have mixed reviews on range and quality.

If anyone has a wireless setup in their home and can recommend something, I would appreciate it.

fleurya, just based upon all the reading I do...

We don't have basements down here, so couldn't try it if I wanted. But from everything I've read, there is some issue with the signal traveling upward. Seemed most of them recommended the wireless router be at least on the first floor if not on the top floor.

Have only used the adapters already in my Mac's for wireless access, so can't really help you on 3rd party adapters.

I do like Linksys (even though mine won't work with my MBP) and the newer d-link triple antenna routers. Can sit outside, approx. 150' from the router with very good reception.

Thanks. It looks like it may be between a Linksys setup which had the best reviews overall, or a Netgear setup with their Rangemax hardware, which is a little more expensive.

I have a Linksys WRT54G at my parents house, in the basement, which I hook up when I go over there and need to use the internet. It seems to work fine throughout the house. The router is almost directly in the center of the basement and works great on the first floor and good on the second (havent tried the attic yet, haha) nor have I really tried it outside (from what I can remeber). If its any help, I think the house is around 1800 sq. feet of living area. At my house I have an airport express, which is sufficient for me and the roomate
