alright i have an imac already but i want to get a macbook, i know i would probably have to save all my files to an extended hard drive to switch to the new computer but then could i just trade in my imac at a mac store for a macbook or what? what are my options here?

You can return you Mac to Apple within 14 days of purchase. The will charge you a 10% restocking fee. After 14 days, you are SOL.

As baggss said, if it's been past 14 days your are SOL. Your next option would to sell the iMac or just keep it and have 2 nice computers.

If you're talking about just moving your files to a new computer, you can buy your new Mac, connect the two via firewire cable, hold down F while booting the older computer, and the Migration assistant on the new computer will set you up. No need to move files to an external drive.
