Hi All

I tried to just transfer my profile from my PC firefox to Mac firefox, but that didn't work and I thought "OK I won't even try that with thunderbird" hehe... Then recently I came accross Portable Apps http://portableapps.com/apps which has among it, for firefox and thunderbird (plus quite a few other progs they have made into portables). Altho I still haven't tried it and I'm still not sure how/if it will work to just be able to transfer things back and forth, has anyone ever tried these progs?

Is this the 'easy' way of getting my settings over to my mac without having to reset things manually?

sorry the mac versions aren't on those pages http://www.theplaceforitall.com/portablethunderbird/

I can't guarantee that your version of Firefox will be compatible with this method but hopefully it will be:

Move an existing profile or restore a backed up profile

It's possible to move the location of a profile folder. This could be useful if you have a backed up profile folder somewhere on your hard drive and want to tell Firefox to use that as your profile. This section explains how to do this.

  • Shut down Firefox completely (File > Exit).
  • Move the profile folder to the desired location. For example, on Windows XP, move the profile from C: \Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default to D: \Stuff\MyProfile. If you are reading these instructions because you want to restore a previously backed up profile, this step isn't necessary. Just note the current location of the profile you want to restore.
  • Open up profiles.ini in a text editor.

The file is located in the application data folder for Firefox :
  • On Windows Vista/XP/2000, the path is %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
  • On Windows 95/98/Me, the path is usually C: \WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
  • On Linux, the path is ~/.mozilla/firefox/
  • On Mac OS X, the path is ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
  • In profiles.ini, locate the entry for the profile you've just moved. Change the Path= line to the new location. If you are using a non-relative pathname, the direction of the slashes may be relevant (this is true for Windows XP).
  • Change IsRelative=1 to IsRelative=0.
  • Save profiles.ini and restart Firefox.

yep that works to back them up, you just can't take them and put them on the mac version tho... it just kept telling me it was already running which I found out is due to the profile not being totally compatible or if you are just replacing a profile in pc world, it is corrupt...
