Change startup chime?

Is this possible? Would be cool if you could change it to another short .wav file like how you can change the default background and apple logo.

Afraid not. My understanding is that it's hard-coded into the hardware (maybe in the EFI?). It exists to signify that the hardware is working, so it's not really part of the OS.

I found a pretty sweet app that silences it. Wonderful for class.

It's called Startup Sound. I'm sure you can find a copy on Version Tracker.

IIRC, Startup Sound only works on PPC Macs .... No, wait up .... found an Intel Beta Version ... doesn't mention Leopard compatibility ... it's a System Pref Pane ....

I'm sorry, but what's PPC? (I'm kinda a new Mac person)

But that screenshot is of the program I'm using.

Is it just me, or isnt there a dev tool HALlab in Leopard which allows you to silence or change the volume of the startup tone? Anyone else played around with it?

How long has Apple been using that startup chime? YEARS! I sorta wished they'd have changed it...
