Not recognizing SmartMedia card reader

I just purchased a PNY Mac/PC compatible SmartMedia card reader for use in my MacBook (most recent generation, bought last August), and although the reader's light turns on when plugged into my computer's USB port, it won't show up on my desktop. Any way to get to the drive?

MBP CD 1.83/2ghz/7200 100g + Mini 2ghz C2D 2gb + Mini 1.42ghz G4 + PM 7200/120 + Newton OMP
Um, this may be a silly question but, did you insert any media into the reader? Nothing will show up until there's a (formatted) card inserted.
