Would using a hub to connect both a external hard drive and a interface such as a firebox be a practical solution?

Or should I go USB interface and Firewire Hard Drive?

Or USB Hard Drive and Firewire Interface?

any other solutions?

FireWire devices can be chained together. Just make sure you get a hard drive with two ports.

Will it still be usable that way in a DAW situation though?

Like would it slow everything down or would it still be really fast?
