External writers and toast

External DVD writer - Will Read but will not write

I have this week tried 2 different external DVD writers from 2 different manufacturers and have had the same error which is that the disk is "preparing" and then it goes straight to writing lead out and verification.

Both drives work fine for reading disks.

Any ideas? or could it be a toast issue? if so any recommendations for an alternative?

Anybody have any ideas as to where I can look for answers on this? (Other sites etc)

I'd be amazed if I was the only mac user out there having this problem.
