I've been thinking about this for a while.....why is there a $100 retail difference between the 4Gb and the 8Gb? Do you really think there is a $100 cost difference between a 4Gb chip and a 8Gb chip? NO!!! Especially when you take into account that they made a whole lot more 8Gb chips. More than 90% of the iPhone customers opted for the 8Gb To me, that means $100 more in the pocket for Apple for every 8Gb phone sold.

Some website figured the cost to make the 8GB iPhone is around $280 or something.
You do realize they are part of corporate america and are trying to make a buck or 2 any way they can, right?

Of course there's not a $100 price difference between a 4 gig chip and an 8 gig chip. Hardware price has absolutely nothing to do with selling price. Just look at Ferraris vs. Saturns. It doesn't cost anything more to make a Ferrari than it does to make a Saturn, but there's still a $100,000 price difference. Apple knows that people are willing to pay for what they want, regardless of cost. They could have debuted it at $199 or $999 and people would still have bought it in droves.

I get your point but you are way off regarding Ferrari. If you've seen how they are made you know why they cost so much. Please don't compare the hardware of a Ferrari to a Saturn or any other assembly line car.

Thanks!

Btw, if we are talking quantity then maybe the 8Gb chip is cheaper than the 4Gb.

X2...Ferrri's are handmade for the most part by very skilled and dedicated craftsmen.....and out of parts that will put the Saturn parts to shame. There is a reason they are expensive....drive one and you'll understand....
