I'm in the process of formatting my external network hard drive for use with my Mac...what file system should I use when formatting it (i.e. FAT32)?

Depends on what you are going to use it for. If it is only to be accessed by macs, then HFS+ should be fine, and will hold files larger than 4 GB, but if it is to be accessed (read and written) to by both Macs and Windows PCs, then FAT32 is the way to go. Just be aware of the file size restraint of 4GB.
