Dear ladies and gents,
I am i dedicated mac user and in no way will I buy anything but. However, while waiting for a mac solution to a pda phone, I reluctantly settled for a wm5(blackjack) phone. I was very excited when the news of the iphone hit the internet but to later be disappointed by the lack of 3g support. Many of you guys are thinking, "Well, I don't really use the 3g service therefore it will not effect my dedication to the lines at the cell phone stores at 6pm on June 29th." Although we all love apple, we sometimes have to stand our ground in order to get the best out of them.

1. Europeans scoffed at the idea that the iphone will not support 3g. They dont even want to touch the phone until apple adds the 3g. In terms of voice calls we do not use 3g and anything affiliated with it. However any multimedia phone you can think of will use 3g. What kind of phone do you think an iphone is? Without the multimedia, it is equivalent to one of those free phones offered by your cell phone companies. You might as well not pay $400-$600. If we hold out then apple will have to give us 3g.

2. 3g will be the standard in the US just as it is in europe. A few years ago EDGE was the cutting edge technology promising faster speeds however it was only available to the european networks. Now it is the standard of all gsm/edge cell phone companies in the US (tmobile, cingular etc.). You will be selling yourself short if you purchase the phone now.

3. There are reports of apple releasing a second version to the eurpoeans late 2007 early 2008. This would make sense because apple wants to market this phone worldwide. If we purchase this phone resulting in sales that are through the roof, it is possible that they will not release that version to us and even if they do all of the people who have originally bought the phone will be holding an almost obsolete phone.

4. If we keep settling for lesser technology then there will be no drive for the US cell phone companies to give us the latest and greatest. This will impact us negatively in the future the same way 3g is impacting us today in the US. 3g is the standard in europe therefore the cell companies compete with each other in terms price and availability to satisfy their customers. Cingular as of today is the only company that offers 3g technology therefore they can charge whatever they want, hence discouraging consumer confidence in the technology. I know that eventually all the companies will be forced to support 3g, but by the time 3g is the standard, they will have something better in europe.

please hold out on this phone until we are offered what everyone else is getting offered. We should not be left further behind in the world of communication.

As much as the OP has some valid points. I think its useless. You still don't know when will all the companies are going to support 3G. And you know for a fact that some people are just buying the iPhone to have it unlocked and used with different Carriers than At&T.

Even if they are going to use it with At&T, I don't think most people care about EDGE or 3G at this point. You always have WiFi which is spread all over the country and its FREE.

So yea I have to agree one of the most USEless threads.

Whether it is useless or not, i do appreciate you guys taking the time out to read it. I got word from a Cingular representative that apple will release the 3g version around christmas time. Like you guys i joined this forum for my interest in mac/iphone. BTW, I dont know about you guys but I've traveled to many places and WIFI is not free unless you're stealing it.

I apologize macman, I am not calling anyone a thief even if I came off that way. When I'm at an airport, hospital, or coffee shop they always ask me to log on to their hotspots and what not. I got fed up with it so i use the broadband 3g connection through my blackjack tethered to my macbook. I get 1000-1500 kps in every major city i go to. It helps when you're traveling via rental car through a city you're not familiar with (along with a portable gps).

I was actually contemplating about getting the iphone as well. I am discouraged from buying it because it is not support 3g.

2) I am entering my 4th year in medical school and as a Dr. it is extremely important to have internet access at all time. For example, if I'm on the road and I get a page/call regarding a patient. I can quickly access their chart using 3g internet. People can send me new information regarding a patient and I can send people information regarding the patient. So it is highly important that I have a phone the supports 3g. Also, Wifi is not accessible everywhere. And its only limited to some coffee shops, airports, and hospitals.

Unfortunately, nobody cares about 3g and apple is just going to take advantage because the majority of the people living in the US is too ignorant to understand whats going on.

One thing the OP totally misses is that in europe 3g networks are much more available than here in the states. Also lets keep in mind that the iPhone will jump onto any Wifi seemlessly. Thats a huge benefit to this product an honestly should be stated alongside any concerns for lack of 3g.

I have to argree about wifi not really being free. Yeah, if I'm at an airport I get free wifi but alot of coffe shops are starting to charge. I don't spend much time at hotels (except for the one that I work for) but when I do, the last thing I want to do is spend time on the internet. I'm usually there for free-time away from my normal life:D

3g is great and all but I will have an iphone before they put in 3g.

So we should never buy anything then because there's going to be a newer version at a later time. :x

I want it because I need a new phone and a mp3 player so that's good enough for me. I don't really care about 3G that much. :D

Mini, you are correct about the HIPPA regulations because the information is privileged. However, I send digital x-rays to other dentists and specialists all the time. The information is privileged for healthcare providers. I believe you have your profile transferred between doctors when you move from one to another in order to have your drug allergy and other health related histories. HIPPA regulations does not allow clinicians to present privileged infromation to other patients. BME is a great field but you do not deal directly with patients therefore the information would never be presented to you.

That aside, I only created this thread to present information. Whether you guys get the phone or not it does not affect me. I will get the iphone but since they will release a second version torwards x-mas, I will wait till then... apologies for stirring up so much trouble

Before I put in my two cents, I wanted to point out that Cingular/AT&T is NOT the only carrier that offers a 3G data network. Sprint and Verizon both have their EVDO data networks, which have been in place for quite a long time. Before you argue that those aren't 3G, you should know that 3G refers to both GSM and CDMA networks, the latter is what Verizon and Sprint use. So AT&T does not have a monopoly on 3G, they simply have a monopoly on the iPhone.

There is a critical flaw in your argument. You ask people not to buy the iPhone or other products that lack the features you desire. While that is a noble gesture, the fact of the matter is that Apple has already produced 3 million iPhones and isn't about to go back and add in a 3G antenna.

Now I can understand skipping out on this version and waiting for the next, but you failed to take into account one thing. If the first generation iPhone does not sell well, then there won't BE a second generation iPhone. If Apple doesn't make money on the iPhone, it won't bother with a second version.

So while you can object and wait for the second version, don't go and tell people not to buy the first generation model because if those don't sell, there won't be an updated model coming out Christmas time.

In fact, it is in YOUR best interest to promote the first generation iPhone. As we all know, Apple has a history of adding features to its products despite having record-breaking sales with the existing model. So with the proliferation of 3G this year and with strong feedback with first generation iPhone users, you can definitely expect a second generation iPhone with the features you want.

I personally am going to wait for a second generation iPhone as the first one doesn't offer the features I need. But I'm not going to tell people not to buy it because the only way I'm getting the iPhone with the features I want is if Apple sells a ton of first generation iPhones.
