digital photo enhancement software for the Mac?

I'm an average guy with a point and shoot digital camera, and have used paint shop pro on the PC to clean up my pics. it's done a good job cleaning up my pics and making most of them 'pop'. I love iPhoto for it's overall use, but find the enhancement tool lacking because i don't want to learn how to use the histogram interface.

are there any plug-ins for iPhoto to simplify the process, or a basic app short of something like Aperature to just clean up digital pics?
