Hi all! just got my macbook a few hours ago and I'm trying to connect to our Office wi-fi. but is says "error joining", other windows laptops in the office were able to connect with no problems. and I was able to connect my macbook to a free wifi at the mall previous to this, so i know it's working.

I've entered the wifi password correctly and even tried different security options for the password.

i thought macs were just supposed to work?

is there a solution to this?

thanks all =)

Is this password WEP, WPA, WPA2? If WEP Is it HEX 128-Bit, Hex 56-Bit, ASCII?

Is the password a 26 character HEX code? Do you know what router or access point they are using there?

Also try putting a $ in front of the HEX code. That has worked in some cases. Every WiFi network that was WEP that I had issues with was either I had the type set wrong or entered the code wrong.

the password has 11 characters (numbers and letters)

i was told the router is an SMC brand (never heard), so it is possible to have incompatibility issues with routers and macs?

SMC is the only brand I have not messed with here or even in the field. 11 character could be ASCII also. Is the password letters and numbers mixed like 0D44B1C601DD etc? That is HEX. If not it's probably ACSII.

Do try that $ in front of the password. It's worked for some. Here I just put in my 26 character key and it works, but some have had issues with some routers. Give that a try.

Never heard of $ proceeding the password, but hey I try to learn something new everyday. Also I don't know, but it sounds like the key is "NOT" in hex, otherwise I'd suggest an 0x.

Good luck!

Yeah, I was suspicious also at first about the $ but seen it work for so many I thought I would let the OP know. I am also wondering if that key is a HEX key and not ASCII.

The $ is a flag stating the string to follow is hex.

Yeah, they use $ when you declare variables when programming microcontrollers. I had no idea that you needed them for passwords for WiFi :/
