What happens when you plug it in? Typically iPhoto will open automatically and prompt you to download your photos.

Tell us a little more about your Mac - what version of MacOS are you running and what are you running it on?

nothing happens when i plug it in. I'm running a brand new macbook with 10.4.9.

I'm thinking that maybe the fact that I have to run it through the dock to connect to the computer that may be causing the issue

Is the camera turned on when you plug it in?

it seems like the computer isn't recognizing the camera what so ever

Welcome to Mac-Forums, stradt03.

Maybe it would be simpler if you got a media card reader. They really aren't expensive. Which type of media card does your digi cam use?

Uh.. Is that a proprietary format? I've never heard of that type of media card before.

Edited to add:

Googled it up and yes you can buy USB media readers for those memory sticks. You'd just have to make sure you plug the reader in a USB port except not the one on the keyboard because it doesn't have enough power.

The mac will not read the sony card direct. Needs card reader plugged in. Mst external devices need to be formatted the correct way it is easy. HFS or fat 32 it will read. You will need a card reader that support the sony stick though. Macs like most PC's only support normal usb fire wire type stuff. The sony stick is a bit more specialised.
Was there a Mac drivers software CD that came with the camera?

Some cameras need some sort of mounting software. I know my Ricoh Capilo R4 came with a program called "Capilo Mounter", which I have set to open every time I plug the camera in. It mounts the camera onto my desktop and I can view the photos. Did the camera or the card come with software for a Mac?

Oh, and does anyone know how to turn the whole "iPhoto opens when you plug your camera in" off? I abhor that program...

You launch OS X's Image Capture and in the Preferences, under the General tab, in the Camera: section, select in the drop-down menu the app you want to take charge of downloading/opening your images.
