As a software developer, linux user, I've been wondering where apple are hiding the # symbol... I need to use it on a regular basis but OSX doesn't seem to have one... I haven't installed my distro of choice yet, but I might aswell find out now, or commenting out lines will be far more difficult than I'd like...

If # isn't shift-3, go into the System Preferences and click on International. Click on Input Menu, then Keyboard Viewer. Make sure "Show input menu in menu bar," at the bottom, is ticked, as well. A flag will appear in the menu bar. Click the flag and choose Keyboard Viewer.

When the Keyboard Viewer is visible, scan it for the # symbol to see where it is. If it doesn't show up, press the shift key. If it still doesn't show up, hold down the option key, then shift-option. The # is hiding there somewhere.

The Dell I'm sat in front of has it just above the Shift key and left of the Return key, ie on the end of the ASDFG... line of keys!

Only US keyboards have it as Shift-3.

As does the French and Spanish ones. English, German and Italian have it where mine is.

I'd assumed that the European countries had standardised keyboard layouts but it appears they vary quite a lot.

Oh well you learn something new every day!

You mean there is no hash key anywhere? If so, have you tried the International system preference thing I posted above?

Alt + 3 is the Hash Key setting, that's good enough for Me.

Yeah as Brown Study mentioned, the keyboard viewer is great for finding "hidden" symbols like this.

Open Sytem Preferences> International> Input Menu and then tick the 'Keyboard viewer' layout. Then select the 'show input menu in menu bar' option.
Go to the menu bar and select keyboard viewer.

This will show you an overview of your keyboard layout. If you press the shift or option key, you'll now see what shortcuts your keyboard layout can access.
