Each member can post one desktop in this thread each month.

The desktop cannot be larger than 800x600.

Not only will posting inappropriate desktop pictures get them deleted, it will also get you banned. This includes anything semi-lewd. This is a family forum if it's not PG then don't post it.

Everyone has such great desktops!

I cannot bring myself to change mine lol

I have the standard Mac desktop with the funny design on it. When I first started using a mac in high school i thought it was so cool. I put a picture on my new macbook and it just reminded me of my PC too much and I felt weird lol

I wish I could bring myself to change it!

go to www.macupdate.com

search for:

candybar
windowshade

that should get you started.

to change the HDD icon all you do is click on the HDD type command I then copy the new icon you want and then hilight the icon in the info window and paste the new one..

find an icon you want and copy it (apple key and C or command C)click one time on your hdd icon.. then type command I or apple key I. there should be a small HDD icon in the top left of the window that pops up.. click one time on it and paste your new icon (command V or apple key V).

thanks, I figured it out from some other instructions though, I thought I had to deal with the big icon lower down on the info screen, not the small upper one

yeah, I tried using shapeshifter but it slowed everything down and the status part for Virtue Desktop didnt change, so it just looked weird. By the way, if you change the name of your HDD on the desktop, will it up any programs? Or does it just change the display name and not the actual file path for apps?

Yeah, i was worried about that when I changed it. It DOES change the file name/path but miraculously does not affect any of the apps. I don't know how it knows, but iPhoto, iTunes, MSN, etc, can all find their pictures/music/chat logs.

nice desktop (im now using the same wallpaper) what app are you using to show the itunes playing thing on the desktop?

It's actually not really on the desktop itself, but floats on top of all windows for a few seconds then disappears (happens everytime a new song plays). It's Synergy. It actually costs around 7ish dollars, but I really like some of the features. Try it out for free at

http://wincent.com/a/products/synergy-classic/

There's actually a program that displays song info on the desktop that looks a lot similar, but forgot what's it called. sorry.

MBasile

I'm using synergy too. I like it because it also has moveable controls that I moved up to the status bar and it comes and goes whenever I open or close iTunes

I have a program that's similar called DeskTunes (lower-left corner). It's a free app from MacUpdate.com, but you don't get any controls or anything. All you really get is the current song's title in the lower lefthand corner of the screen. You'll also get album artwork if it's available for the song you're listening to.

Thanks. The numbers are the BLU DOT DESKTOP CLOCK (http://www.bludot.com/good_design_is_good/clock)

From their site:

Taking the form of a one-inch square on your computer desktop, the Blu Dot Desktop Clock displays a different image for every minute of the dayŚ720 in all. A mono (hot linked) creation.

I'm guessing you mean the upper left of the screen. If not then that's also the time in the upper right...:black:

Probably because they have the 4 door. I've seen a couple like the one in that desktop driving around here.

Press Command + 3 for a total screenshot. I then open it up in Preview (Double click on image) and Save As a JPG. It's at the Save As window that I select a much lower quality by moving the slider down so that the image is uploaded quickly. You can stick to the .png format of course, as long as the image "weight" is no more than 100kb. I like to lower the image quality so that the size is only about say ... 40kb.

Command + 4 is for when you just want to grab a section so there's a crosshair which you drag and release to take the snapshot.

Command + 4 and then press the SpaceBar is for when you want to take a specific picture of say an icon or a window or an image ... try it ... when you press the SpaceBar a Camera icon appears and you just click the mouse to take the snapshot!

NanoBite

OK, you have to go to "Manage Attachments" in the Additional Options section that appears when you "Go Advanced". Then a new window opens where you can choose a file to upload to the forum. It might take a while but just be patient.

ImageShack is also a good way to get larger images on this forum ... you can upload the image in a specified size, like 800 X 600 to their website and host it from there. That image size is just right for the DeskTop & Photo of the Month threads ... Others use Flickr too ...

MaDDog,
When posting the pic... click the Yellow icon that sort of looks like mountains (don't use the "earth-icon" which is for web links)... paste the image address in there.

On flickr go to your image... click all sizes... then medium... then right-click.... then select "Copy Image Address"... Now Paste that in the Yellow-Mountain icon in the "Reply" window.

using the link you posted above (a bit small).. .it will look like this:

I wish we could, as it's nice to click Edit, then Copy links/images for new comers instead of just posting a link to an old post... IMO anyway.

That makes it difficult to go back and fix up your mistakes? Like I told MaDDoG to press Command + 3 to take a screenshot ... well that's clearly wrong and I'd like to be able to correct that miss-information without creating a near duplicate post.

The program Imagewell works very nicely for resizing images. Just drop the picture into image well, resize and then drop it right back on to your desktop. *Note* It took me a little while to figure out how to use the program because it's so simple. I was expecting drop down menus and the like, I love Apple and OS X:bone:

...and here is my contribution...

Thanks mace ... yeah, I use ImageWell too . .. it's pretty nifty!

NanoBite
04-09-2007, 06:45 AM
Yeah, sorry MD, the edit button vanished on me .... I had forgotten to add the "Shift" into the equation ...

Anyway, here's a step-by-step on uploading to the Mac-Forums website:

Make sure the file size is no more than 1mb. if it is then close the Get Info window and double-click the image to open it up in "Preview". Click on File and then Save As and save it as a JPEG and move the 'Quality Slider' along to the left and set it to the 2nd notch and click Save.

Two things might happen - you will be asked to overwrite the original file with the one you are trying to save, OR, you have 2 images on your desktop. If so, make sure you know which of the two is the smaller file before continuing on to step 12.

Go to the thread and then to the last post and click POST REPLY. (to the left underneath the last post).

Below the Submit Reply button there is an Additional Options section. Click on the Manage Attachments button in the 'Attach files' section.

Now a new window springs open which is the place you upload your image. Click on the 'Choose File' button and in the window that opens, navigate to the correct image which should be still sitting on your DeskTop. Click "Choose" and the in the Manage Attachments window click on the Upload button.

When your file has been uploaded, a new section appears in the Manage Attachments window called 'Current Attachments' and shows your image there. You can now click on 'Close this window' which is in the top right corner.

Now you are nearly done! Add some text to your post and just click on the 'Submit Reply' button and that's it!

That post is incorrect. I couldn't edit it as the edit button disappeared on me.

You need to add Shift into the equation, so it's Shift + Command + 3 etc ...

It's not just large transport aircraft with upturned wingtips, called winglets. Small aircraft use them too. They reduce the effects of wingtip vortices.

BTW, here's my desktop.

Gorgeous colors. Definetely reminds me of the step and repeat printing process of silk screen fabric printing. Intriguing images...

Probably an older version. I had my iPod way before the mac, so it's PC bound and it's not getting switched since my desktop is getting moved to file server status.

I really love changing icons but after my last experience with Candybar, I'm a bit scared. Last time, I had alot of trouble getting back my original finder and dashboard icons...

Flic
04-22-2007, 04:46 PM
Thanks Netty! I didn't use candybar to change mine, did it myself. Right click 'get info' then paste the new icon over the old one. Then to get rid you just click on the icon in the same menu and hit delete and its back to normal. More long winded than Candybar though...

different toolbars, and dock themes.

Shapeshifter (http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/shapeshifter) changes your windows and menu bar. overall look of finder.

Cleardock (http://unsanity.com/haxies/cleardock) alows you to customize the look of the dock background i.e make it clear w/o the border. but you can also give it color and change the color of the 'application is open' arrows.

Candybar (http://www.panic.com/candybar/) allows you to change system, application, and volume icons. When you are seeing different icons in the dock that is generaly what is being used.

example of my system icons, also the pink tiger theme (applied with shapeshifter)::

Hi guys, Im new here, but have browsed through and the thread looks good. I do have a couple of questions. Im very new to graphic design and have just got my MAC and am now teaching myself the software. How do you create a reflection on an image like I have seen so many of you do? If it is a long process does anybody have a link for a tutorial? Also some of you have taken photos, how do you get the object at the front in great focus but keep the back picture out of focus?

Paralex loving some of your work!

Cjay - I love your sofa background very minimilistic. It looks great though. Can you tell me where I can get that picture from unless anybody else here knows how I can get it?

Finally Does anybody know how to get rid of the greyish type box that surrounds all the icons at the bottom?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Yes, mathogre ... spot on! Its part of the inner sleeve album artwork from Overnite Sensation (http://www.science.uva.nl/~robbert/zappa/files/jpg/Over-Nite_Sensation.jpg). I watched a Classic Albums episode the other night and they concentrated on Overnite Sensation and Apostrophe. It was brilliant!
