• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

SuperDuper and FCP on backup drive

Please excuse my ignorance but I'm sort of a newbie. I bought a 320GB external hard drive. If I use SuperDuper and back up my computer, that would take 100 GB +/-. Can I still use that hard drive for other projects, such as saving video I use for editing purposes like Final Cut Pro?

Or does the drive just become a back-up with SuperDuper on it?

You need to partition your drive first, which you do via Disk Utility. This is in the Utilities Folder within your Applications Folder. You then see the different partitiions as individual drives within the Finder.

You go into disk utility, click on the disk you are going to partition (in the bar on the left), and then hit the partition tab, select how many partitions you want (2 right?). Make them both Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then make them the sizes you want. One would be the size of the disk you are backing up, and the other would be the remaining. Name both partitions and then hit partition.
Pretty simple.
