backing up files between macs

I have a macbook with a limited 60gb hd. It isn't full yet, but I'm in college at the moment and my family has a imac with 160gb hd. All I want to do is back up my files on the family computer. Can I connect my macbook to the imac with an ethernet cable and back up my music, videos, and pictures to the imac?

If so, could someone tell me or direct me to a place where I can find out how to do this.
