Well it's March already! Let's see your desktops!

I know you guys know the rules, but here they are anyway..

Each member can post one desktop in this thread each month.

The desktop cannot be larger than 800x600.

Not only will posting inappropriate desktop pictures get them deleted, it will also get you banned. This includes anything semi-lewd. This is a family forum if it's not PG then don't post it.

Got bored and changed my desktop wallpaper.

http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/7483/picture1dg4.jpg

*EDIT*

Application Enhancer (ClearDock)- To change the dock's background & background border colour

ShapeShifter - To change the theme and icons. Used Photopro 1.5 from interfaceLift, which came with icons as well.

I had this jim lee sketch art (http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/1333/allstarbatmanandrobin05ua4.jpg) in a folder, just applied it to my desktop for fun and it looks great.

What would be really cool is if those that post pictures also list what modification software you use to do things like change the color of the Menu bar, dock, etc.

How do I uninstsall Cleardock? I thought it would give me an application window instead of just changing it automatically.

My dock is clear, but I don't have an application in the folder?

Stretch

Cleardock is an APE. In system prefs, go to Application Enhancer, and change the settings there, and uninstall by deleting it from your ~/library/application enhancers/ folder

where can I get my hands on those? If you mean the main icons used in the Finder, they're called Blend Blue (http://www.macthemesforums.net/viewtopic.php?t=16779049) (part of the Nico Nique theme mod)- which are a modification of the original Blend icons (http://interfacelift.com/icons-mac/details.php?id=1943) which were black.

Sometimes I know how this guy feels.

you wouldn't happen to remember the name of the photographer? I'm sure I saw a doco on his work, and absolutely loved it. For some of his similar shots (assuming it's the guy I'm thinking of) he and the crew would spend the entire day installing hundreds of lights all the way down the street to get just the right lighting and effects. I just can't remember his name to check his work out again.

not a widget actually. It's called Desktop Calendar. You can customise pretty much everything with it. Sometimes it's a little hesitant to do what you want, but it gets there in the end.
(changing the scale of the calendar is done through Layout Mode through the menu bar, not preferences as you would first think - the default is a little too big for my liking)

Link here (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17159)

You'll probably want to customise it completely, as the defaults are just plain ugly. So long as you have some nice, legible fonts, you'll be fine.

Also, worth setting it to your startup items. ;) Enjoy!

Yeah totally. Some MS technician must've said "You know, Jim, actually you don't 'read' RAM...".
There goes Jim inserting quotes.

Anyway, the scales idea is great, but I think if I put up a wallpaper I'd never do it and just feel even more guilty.

I use SizzlingKeys (http://www.yellowmug.com/sk4it/) ... it allows you to start/stop/skip forward/backwards while having iTunes running but minimised as mini-player (click the green circle with the +).

Have you ever wished you could control iTunes without leaving your current app? SizzlingKeys lets you do just that - and more - in an intuitive and unobtrusive way.

SizzlinKeys is Universal Binary so it's good for PPC and Intel Macs.

03-09-2007, 07:57 PM
Yea looks very good Turtle, so what do the Dock Icons represent?

Also does anyone find that the Customisation Add-Ons slow your Mac down, it's the main reason I stopped using them?

From left to right:

The symbol from Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is the Finder, The black one is Safari, Yellow is Adium, Red is Photoshop, Blue is iTunes, Green is Limewire

I figured I'd only use those few since theyre the main apps I use all day long plus I wanted to keep the dock nice and simple.

As for slow down...only at startup its about 10-15 seconds longer but no big deal for me since normally when I walk into my apartment first thing I do is hit the power button then put down the keys and do the usual running around and flipping lights witches and what not so by the time i sit at my comp everythings nice and ready to roll.

what kinds of 'addons'? You should check in Activity Monitor that the ones you're running are right for your system. For example, if you're running an intel mac, make sure the addons are universal or intel - PPC might slow your machine down a bit.

I noticed some shapeshifter skins slowed mine down, and even affected some software. Illustrator for example didn't display ANY swatches when I ran it under a skin.

There are some great addons that don't really slow down the performance of your computer - but it depends what you do and whether they're useful to you or not ;)

Can someone tell me how you make the background for the dock clear? I can find a setting control for that.

Also, does anyone have problems with downloaded files or new folders not showing up on their desktop using Shapeshifter? I downloaded some files for class, but they don't show up on my desktop, however they do appear when I go to my desktop in Finder. I also made a new folder on the desktop and it won't show up either. As soon I I typed in the folder name and lcicked outside the folder, it disappeared, again, showing up in Finder just fine.

Get Open Office...just kidding.

Change it manually.

1. Click on the icon for the application you wish to change
2. Click on Finder > File > Get Info
3. In the Get Info window, click on the icon you wish to change
4. Click on Finder > Edit > Paste

4. Click on Finder > Edit > Paste

I got to the "get info" window as you said, for MS Word for example, but from there I'm a little lost. There is a big pic for the logo under "preview" in "get info" but when I click on that, it just opens Word. I highlighted the icon I want to use and hit the command for copy, but don't know where/how to paste. I tried drag and drop the icon to the "get info" screen, but no luck there either.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to appearance changes.

Brown Study
03-18-2007, 06:42 PM
Do a Get Info on a program or folder icon you want to use, click on the icon, then copy it. Then close that Get Info or move it aside, and open the Get Info of the icon you want to replace. When that Get Info is open, paste. (The icon you pasted over will still be there if you cut the one you just pasted.)

fleurya
03-18-2007, 07:03 PM
It sounds like you're saying click on the icon and copy/paste inside the "get info" screen. Copy and Paste aren't avaaiable options in the "get info" screens, so I guess I'm either compeletely lost on this, or my computer won't let me do what you're saying.

Brown Study
03-18-2007, 08:19 PM
Let's do a practise run with a new folder. Create one on the desktop.

Find any other folder (or application) with an icon, right-click on it, and slide the cursor down to Get Info.

After the Get Info window opens, click once on the icon at the top left of the Get Info window. Then go under Edit in the menu bar and choose Copy. Close the Get Info window.

Right-click on the folder created on the desktop, and choose Get Info. Click once on the icon at the top left of the Get Info window. Go to Edit in the menu bar and choose Paste. Close the Get Info window, and that's it.

fleurya
03-18-2007, 11:49 PM
I got it. I was a little confused on which icone to click on. I was thinking of what was showing in "preview" under "get info" and not even looking at the icon in the top left.

Thanks, Brown Study. You're very kind and patient to keep helping me out. Big +Rep!!

What does the show being 'fairly old' have to do with it? Are you saying I'm old?
:p
If a show has good writing and in the case of animation - good, er, animation - I'll watch it, regardless of it's age. Dark Shadows, Twilight Zone - the classic episodes are the best.

CB is sci-fi , action, comedy, great writing and the American Voice actors are great.
Cowboy Bebop is one of the few anime I enjoy watching with the English overdub. GITS (Ghost In The Shell) and GITS:Stand Alone Complex is another.
Most other anime, sometimes the choice of English voice actors just doesn't "feel right", so I watch with subtitles.

I just meant people usually will use fresh pics from new events, shows, whatever. Since CB is a bit old, I just thought people who watched it might have moved on to something else.

Anyway, I was, and still am, putting my foot in my mouth here. What I should have said was, "hey, great CB background! It's an older series, but one of the best ever made!" And yes, the english voice actors are much better than most I've heard. Purists know the best way to watch is usually with subs.

nice wallpaper. AWESOME avatar. That is it's real tongue, right? Classic photo :)

That's Sammy's picture, our beloved 10 year old rescue. Yes, it is a real photo when he was just starting to wake up. He is a crack up. I have never had so many photos of the same pet (or person) with tongue sticking out.

Here you go. (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12095) You can thank Pulse-8 for that. He found it when I was looking for the calendar.

Thanks to both of ya.

The Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack(s) is to kill for. It is by far one of my favorite collections of music and has given me an appreciation for a lot of different types of musical styles.

Sadly, this is the most customization I have ever done to my computer. LOL

Okay... (sigh)... I just switched yesterday and I have no idea how to grab any of these great images to use on my desktop. No right-click... save image as...

Can anyone throw a newbie a bone?

Thanks!

Welcome here Oh Henry! You should see a Save as by right-clicking. Or you can drag and drop to your desktop the images.

With the touchpad, I don't know how to get right-click options. So I just installed a mouse and now I have my right-click back.

Frustrating... No complaints though, just growing pains.

Sorry, I don't have a laptop but I do know on the new MacBook and MacBook Pros you can right-click. I just don't know how it is done.

A lot of members here have one: surely one of them will jump in and explain it to you.

under system prefs you can do a lot with the touchpad options, including set up two finger tap to right click.
