maybe I am wrong, but i thought that anyone with a mobile phone could sign up for gmail??

That's correct... I just know some folks who would rather not go the mobile phone route...

imac 20" 216 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GBSDRAM, 250 GB hd, Airport Extreme, Bluetooth 2.0
No invite is actually needed (maybe there's some advantage?). I just signed up for gmail on the goggle site and they call your phone to give a code for you to use for sign-up then you're in. Pretty simple and easy process. By the way, I really like gmail, it was a good choice for me.
