I'm slightly new to the mac community... I was wondering if it's possible to build my own mac, and if it is, where would be a good place to start researching?

Nope.

Get a PowerMac G4 or G5 and you could add a video card, RAM, DVD burner, PCI cards, or upgrade the processor (G4s only).

That's about it for customization.

You'll have more fun playing with an Apple pre-built machine.

If you ever put together your own PC you aren't really missing anything or have any lacking knowledge as to how its build. There are a few diffrent components in Mac( PPC processor, motherboard) but other than that its the same principal. What truely sets a mac apart from a PC is the fact that you don't have to worry about drivers, compatibility and what not. You hook it up, turn it on, and it works (untill a part dies out). It makes useing a computer so much easier.

You could just buy parts separately on ebay and put it together.
