Hey,

Can someone please tell me with absolute certainty as to whether apple's webcam "isight" is compatible with pc users? I know that it is not compatible through apple's software "ichat av" but wanted to know if I used something like Yahoo messenger would I be able to chat/see with a pc user?
I am getting mixed reports when I speak with the apple store, so I figured since the apple specialists have no freakin idea about the products they sell maybe someone out here does!!
I appreciate your response in advance!
Cheers

Yes you can use iSight with PC Users
as of now Yahoo messenger is the only one to support it but AIM is supposedly going to incorporate video in their next release and there are rumors of iChat being released for windows

Are you asking:

You are a windows user and you want to be able to use the isight on your PC?

or:

Your friends are PC users and you are a Mac user and you want to be able to AV chat with them?

The latter is what I mean. I want to be able to chat/see with my friends (pc users) from my mac. Also, does anyone know what the quality and speed are like with DSL or a Cable connection? Is there a time lag or is it smooth visual and speech? Does it make a difference if I have isight or can i save the $$$ and buy a logitech camera for my mac?

Sorry to bombard you all with these questions but appreciate any feedback.
Cheers

I have an iSight camera and was just chatting using iChat AV with someone from Brisbane, Australia (I am in the UK) and we both had iSight cameras, cable modems, and iChat AV. The picture/speech quality wasn't perfect, perfect, perfect, but better than anything else I've seen by a mile. And let's put it this way, we were able to chat back and forth quite happily, and see each other very well indeed.

As for your original question: you can cam2cam with PC users using Yahoo Messenger (there is a Mac version you can dowload from the web site), but at the moment it doesn't support audio for Mac users, so you still have to type back and forth to each other while watching the video (which may or may not be a problem, depending on what you are . . . err . . . doing, heh heh)

But iChat AV for Windows would be fab. My parents have AIM and we chat all the time (with them on a PC and me on a Mac) but without video or audio, just with text.

Someone also told me to check out iVisit.com for going cam2cam with PC users, but I never actually did. Have a look though, there might be something there that I am missing out on?

Just wondering. . . has anyone actually done this?

I downloaded AIM 5.5 onto my parents' PC . . . and then tried to initiate a one-way video chat with them (they don't have a cam yet) from my PowerBook, using my isight and iChatAV, and it didnt work. I just got several vague error messages like 'unable to complete the connection' or 'there has been an unknown error.'

I can text chat with them fine, but can't get the pic from my Isight onto their PC . . . has anyone else managed to actually do it?

Nope, both on Broadband. As I said, they don't have a cam, but as Invite to One-Way Video Chat is an option, I didn't think that would be a problem?

Dunno?!

I only registered to post in this thread, so try this:

It's called AIM Triton. It's a new AIM client which is in the demo or beta stage, I forget. I tried it earlier today initiating a video chat from my MacBook to my Windows PC which has no camera and it worked. The only thing is I don't know if audio is supported since I didn't check. I'm assuming it is though. Use iChat AV on your Mac and tell the other party to use Triton.

Cheers.
