i recently got a mac mini (intel). sometimes (like 4 out of 10) when i start up the computer my keyboard does not work. i have set it up with 3 user accounts on it. so when it boots up it takes you to the user screen to enter your password. the only solution i've found is to restart the computer and then the keyboard works. I'm using a non mac usb keyboard. any suggestions?

Have you got all the latest firmware updates installed?

There was one that has to do with the keyboard a while back...

Or get an apple keyboard.

Run the Software Updater again to make *sure* you've got everything. Also, the keyboard needs to be plugged directly into the Mac and *not* into a USB hub. Lastly, if you have any devices plugged into the keyboard (if it has USB slots on it), remove them.

If all else fails, return it to the Apple store and show them the problem.

I'm not positive that all firmware updates appear as part of the normal Software Update process. I had a problem with my iMac when I first got it as the mouse kept disappearing (and once or twice the keyboard went as well) after coming out of sleep mode.

From memory I thought I had to do a separate search on the Apple site for the firmware updater and install it separately. If I had my iMac here I could give you more details but it may be worth a quick search on Apples support site as it fixed my issues.

The one I think I used was:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imacearly2006firmwareupdate101.html

and the SMC update:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imacearly2006smcfirmwareupdate.html

But I see there are equivalents for the Mac Mini:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macminiearly2006firmwareupdate101.html

and

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macminiearly2006smcfirmwareupdate.html

It's worth a try, it made a big difference to mine - it's not missed a beat since these were installed, and if you've already got the latest version it'll tell you.
