• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Mini DVDs and MACs

Hello, sorry if this is a newbie question, but can the superdrives on the current powerbooks, etc accept mini DVD's? I know that these are slot-loaded drives, so I am not sure if the mini dvd format will work in there. Any help is appreciated!

You should not use the 5cm disks in slot loading drives at all. They simply don't work, and can damage the drive.

Yeah, you're better off using an external tray-loading DVD drive.

They fit 30 minutes of standard DVD quality film. The new Sony Handycams use 5cm rewritable DVDs.

They've been around for ages, you can even get them at Staples. They hold 1.46gb of data/movie (20 - 60 minutes of video depending on the quality from what I've read). If you shop around online, you can get a 25-pack for under $15. Certain camcorders use them, but I prefer MiniDV tapes because they're easy to edit and can be re-used. They also have double-sided discs that can hold a total of 2.92gb (1.46gb per side). SuperMediaStore has some, along with more info:
