I've searched Google and these forums, and couldn't find anything, but here's the story:

I tried installing Ubuntu from the dvd I downloaded (yes properly burned the .iso file through disk utility). I HAVE sucessfully installed Windows XP in the past on my iMac 17". So, I opened up boot camp, partitioned, and started the windows installation with my Ubuntu disk in the DVD drive. Started install, everything went well until I had to choose which disk to mount onto. I chose the third disk (the one I partitioned for Windows) and it didn't work. I tried formatting the drive, and it still didn't work. I was thinking, maybe I have to partition the drive, restart OS X, then in disk utility reformat the drive as a UNIX drive?

I don't believe you need to use bootcamp, I think you can just install it straight up because it is x86 version.. and i don't believe there is anything blocking it from installing. You can installl linux on the ppc macs, so i can't see why you can't do it on the intel's easily.

are there any good tutorials you know of? if so, links please? I'm doing research myself now.

Also, if needed, I DO have an external hard drive. I might boot off of that for Linux.

i've been looking into putting ubuntu on my imac and i've found some good information. onmac.net is a great source for alternative operating systems on intel macs. in fact, their wiki has a how-to for triple booting osx, xp, and ubuntu. if you try this, let me know, i would love to know how it works.

I don't want to triple-boot, just OS X and Ubuntu.

and how do I install refit? I mean, I downloaded, but what's the root of my Macintosh HD?

all right, I give up. I've tried everything, and it won't seem to work. Oh well, maybe another day.
