Hi guys.
A friend of mine used my MBpro on different questionable sites.
Could my Mbpro be hijacked? It is an old MBpro 2008 with Osx Mavericks.

Kind of not so nice it is on in the morning by itself.
Fans running often.

I have heard that it is possible to use a Mac and control it through internet.
I am concerned and I heard they can even use your Mac to store files and spread virus?

How to check if I am still safe?

Why do you lend it. Asking orf trouble. Some folk just love to get their hands on a Mac and then go haywire on it.

Sounds like you have a hardware problem. Do you still have the original install disk? Pop it in and access Apple Hardware Test.

How about doing a hardare test online via the alt d option under restart?

I have heard that it is possible to use a Mac and control it through internet.

Shut it down, wait a minute, then boot it up but use Safe Boot Mode, (hold down the shift key when you hear the startup chime), login and maybe run the Repair or verify routines in Disk Utility.app(Utilities folder) and then Restart normally.

Thay will purge a lot of surplus stuff.

Then download, install and run the MALWAREBYTES FOR MAC.app
https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/
Follow any instructions.

You're probably all cleaned up.

EDIT:
Does anyone know where one can get the previous version (1.3.1 I think) of Malwarebytes for Mac??

The current available v. 3.x requires OS X 10.10.x to run it seems.

I am not certain where you could find 1.3.1, but at the link below, you can download 1.2.6:

https://data-cdn.mbamupdates.com/web/mbam-mac-1.2.6.730.dmg

The actual download link is referenced in the Malwarebytes for Mac Forum:

https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/210582-malwarebytes/

I don't believe that you'd need a UID for the forum, but you may....

Thanks very much for the legit URL Cr00zng, and it runs and works in Mavericks 10.9.5 (that a 94 year old client also runs), and it also provides an update to:
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac 1.3.1

(I had stripped my own version and didn't want to give him a copy of that one.) :Blushing:

Some sites had an older version listed but they also tend to add some extra unwanted stuff with their downloads I didn't want to have to deal with!!! :Mischievous:

So thanks again.

Agreed. I hope I'm still able to use a computer if I make it to that age.

Actually he's just a tenant that's living in the hose of a friend of my wife and he asked if she knew of any Mac guru the lived nearby, and I got a call.

A very nice fellow and in very good health, physical and mental wise but got hit with some nasty "Ransomeware". All fixed.
