Photoshop quirks

Photoshop (C3) just now giving problems - when selecting rectangular or oval marquee, can't then cancel it to permit other actions. Have got around it by clicking magic wand or lasso and going from there. Also will not permit moving pasted into layers with mouse - only nudge. Any idea of possible cause/solution - or is it just old age or pressure to buy later version?

Have you tried resetting your preference? You can do it by holding down the Control + Alt/Option + Shift keys as you start the program. That should clear out the preference files and photoshop will rebuild it.

Thanks for your quick reply, Lisa. I reset preferences, as you suggested, and a summary check shows it now permitting moving layers and I could cancel the marquee selection direct from the marquee "button". Will give it a better workout tomorrow - trying to finish a job right now.
