We run a set of macs on a mixed-platform network. I want to use one solely as a simple file server with osx file sharing. The router gives out new ip addresses with every startup. Is there any way to establish a static ip address for that file server?

You can:
1. Turn off DHCP on the router and use static IP's for all network host devices.
2. Assign an IP to your server that is towards the end of the subnet (ie: 10.0.1.254) so another machine getting an IP by DHCP won't conflict.
3. Change the DHCP Range on the router (if possible) and use #2, except you won't worry about any IP conflicts, assuming you had 254 network devices to start with.
