Remember this.

You need to leave an absolute minimum of 10%, some say 15-20%, free space on any drive for it to work anywhere near peak performance. You may like to run erase Free Space, but your drive is simply too full or too small.

I can't explain the math either, but my 1TB hard drive has over 900GB free space because I have archived things to a 2TB external drive. Do you have an external drive? It's a good thing to have. I partitioned mine and have a Backup partition for Time Machine on it also.

Have you emptied the trash, after you deleted the files you no longer needed?
