Real Instrument / not very strong signal?

Why is it when I try to record my acoustic guitar or bass into Garage
Band...the signal that I have is not very strong at all...it just barely
lights the recording led's?? I am going through a MAudio Auattro.

Should I use a better 'interface'? Or is it that at all?

I eventually want to hook up a Microphone, but I think that may be
asking too much.

I don't think Garage BAnd has the ability to increase the signal strength,
only what's already recorded.

Help please.

Thanks

Vern

Did you mean the M-audio Quattro? If so it has no pre-amps, get a cheap pre-amp and hook that up to the Quattro, and then take your guitar and hook it up to the pre-amp.
